Commemoration of July 21st – Moon Day

· Commemoration of July 21^st – Moon Day

Under the aegis of DISHA –the CGCC unit of Govt. THS & VHS, Moon day was observed. Selected student representative Arya and Adarsh familiarized students about the spectacular expedition made in the space shuttle Appolo 11 by Neil Arm Strong and Edwin Aldrin on July 21^st, 1969 at 1.48 am (Indian Standard Time). It was summed up by stating that an American Flag was left on the Moon’s surface as a reminder of the great accomplishment and by quoting Neil Arm Strong’s historic words, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for man kind”. Adarsh of VHSE second year enlightened students on Chandrayan I, India’s first mission to Moon on October 22^nd 2008 at 6.22am from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota. He then stated that with this mission India became the 5^th entity to set foot on the moon.

Besides this students turned up with outstanding models like MOON IMPACT and BRAHMOS Model. Needless to say this celebration simply spotted the creative prowess of scientifically inclined minds. They were also provided an opportunity to view a CD display on ISRO’s Chandrayan Mission in the VHSE seminar hall. In addition to this a space quiz was conducted. Collection of space literature was also assigned to students. Teachers thus successfully drove home the importance of science and technology in life.

Across the globe this year (2011) is being celebrated as International Chemistry Year. Chemistry is a branch of science which is central to the study of all branches of material sciences and life sciences. Madam Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1911. So 2011 forms a centenary. International Association of Chemical Societies was also founded in 1911. 2011 marks its centenary too. So 2011 is upheld as ‘IYC”.

VHSE CGCC, DISHA in association with the VHSE Chemistry Department has planned a year long programme to celebrate the IYC which is listed below.

1. Seminar on Chemistry in every day life

This aims at imparting the role of Chemistry in every day life. It is found

in the foods we eat the air we breathe, soaps, emotions, literally every

object we see or touch and what not. Surprisingly even the human body is made up of Chemical Compounds which are a combination of elements.

2. Science Exhibition

3. Manuscript Magazine

4. Manufacturing Swadeshi products to impart self employment training for

students and thereby gain practical knowledge of application of chemistry. It is proposed to manufacture the following products.

1. Toilet Soap

2. Washing Soap

3. Detergent Powder

4. Dish wash Powder

5. Cleaning Lotion

In July, First Year and Second Year Students were trained to make toilet soaps and washing soap respectively. We intend to highlight the role of swadeshi products in fostering the progress of the nation and promoting health of our country men, thereby instilling in students a sense of pride in being an Indian. The motto behind this effort is ‘Then it was salt against colonialisation, now it is soap against globalization’.

Entry Festival

Entry Festival for 1^st year VHSE students was organized by CGCC unit ‘Disha’ on 27-06-2011 , 10am in the auditorium. All admitted students and parents promptly attended it. The Academic Head, Mr. Ramesh chaired the meeting and dwelled on the pass percentage of previous years. He also spoke in detail about initiatives which will be taken by the teachers to achieve outstanding success in years to come . Mrs. Sumayya brought to everyone’s notice that the school bagged the prestigious prize for best career guidance and counseling activities in Kollam District. She also enlightened the audience about the activities of ‘Disha’ and the significance of Career Guidance and counselling in the present day. Mrs. Sabeena Beegum the physics teacher introduced the students and parents to the full fledged library in the school, through which students could access career journals and dailies. The Maths teacher, Mr. Nripan Bos familiarized the world of IT to the students and other academic activities scheduled for students. Mrs. Deepa, the English teacher spoke about the objectives of English learning like self expression, communication, vocational requirement, ability to use language in different social circumstances, personality development and academic activities. The Vocational Instructor Mrs. Jisha familiarized the PTC unit and Excel.
